If you have a large cavity that's too big for a filling, it may be time for a crown. Crowns are used to restore and enhance teeth that are damaged, or to replace missing teeth. A crown, also called a cap, is used to cover a damaged tooth entirely. A crown not only strengthens the tooth, but it can also dramatically improve the tooth's appearance, shape and alignment.
Crowns are also recommended following a root canal because the tooth is more fragile and needs protection. You may be a candidate for a crown if you're missing a tooth, and the dentist needs to put in a dental bridge or a tooth implant.
